They are meant to be in proper farm situations. But I imagine that some of us do have some great memories about Easter chicks and bunnies, too. Most of the parents who thought the pastel chicks were cute on Easter soon found out they were just baby chickens after all. As the colors faded, and the mess got worse, the chicks had to go. The lucky chicks got to go to a farm, and some lived out their lives in little backyard chicken coops, still treated as pets by the children. Our neighbors on a Navy base had pet chickens in the backyard of their quarters, much to the disdain of a nearby Admiral. After a vicious attack by some unknown predator one night, they were down to one cute little, very tame hen. She had been named “Jeffery” by a little boy who had hoped his blue chick was a rooster. The parents knew Jeffery had to move on to a safer home. That is when my in-laws from Ohio visited. They had chickens on their farm at home and agreed to take Jeffery with them in — what else but a cat carrier. We had already arranged to go to an amusement park together on their way back to Ohio, but the warm weather had us worried. As we arrived, we saw that the park had a free pet day care for visitors and we got an idea. After all, Jeffery was rather tame. The amazed attendants told us that it was the first time someone had checked in a pet chicken and they seemed to have fun with Jeffery. I think we made their day and provided them with a story to tell their friends for years. Jeffery traveled well and had a lovely long life as a free range hen and provided her rescuers with lots of eggs. She even hatched a few chicks of her own. That story had a happy ending, and so does another local bird story. I reported two weeks ago about a stray peacock that had adopted a family in the Rocky Point area in Mad River Township. Two people reported missing a peacock and Mr. Peacock went home with the person who arrived with a very attractive peahen. That left us with one missing peacock. I’m happy to report that that peacock has also been located. He has been cared for since mid-November by a man who lived more than a mile away. With all the nastiness in the world, it feels really good to report happy endings on the day after Easter and the beginning of spring. Have a great week.
