PETALING JAYA: Incumbent Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) president Sultan Ahmad Shah will be challenged by his son, Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah as well as Johor Football Association president (PBNJ) Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim for the president's post at FAM's 50th Congress on May 25. FAM secretary-general Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin said three candidates would be contesting to fill the two deputy president posts, namely incumbents Datuk Seri Subahan Kamal and Datuk Seri Afandi Hamzah as well as Football Association of Selangor (FAS) deputy president, Datuk Abdul Mokhtar Ahmad. Libertarians seem to have needed a Tax Day story, and they found it in the selective reading of a sensible Tax Court opinion based on settled law. The republic is safe. Get a grip. The court merely said that attorney-client privilege can be involuntarily waived in when a taxpayer puts subjective state of mind at issue in asserting an affirmative defense to tax shelter penalties. The case is AD Investment 2000 Fund LLC v. Commissioner, 142 T.C. No. 13 (2014). Do people have a right to plan to minimize their taxes? Of course they do. Judge Learned Hand wrote that “there is nothing sinister in so arranging one’s affairs as to keep taxes as low as possible . . . nobody owes any public duty to pay more than the law demands.” (Commissioner v. Newman, 159 F.2d 848 (2d Cir. 1947). Judge Hand’s statement presumes that the tax planning that the taxpayer did fulfills the requirements of the law. He was not declaring that the taxpayer had a right to make a wild bet on his tax return. The Son of BOSS tax shelter—which was the underlying shelter in the Tax Court case—was a wild bet against the house. Taxpayers take a chance when they enter packaged tax shelters sold to them by irresponsible tax professionals. And when there is no basis in law for the taxpayer’s return position, the taxpayer could be liable for shelter penalties. That is what happened in the Tax Court case, AD Investment 2000. Son of BOSS was a hokey shelter that didn’t work. It was very popular with folks who got instantaneously rich in the tech bubble and had big capital gains all in a single taxable year. It was heavily flogged by big accounting firms. Rich people are often naïve, and think tax practitioners can waive a magic wand to get them out of taxes. Many SOB cases have gone to court and lost on the merits. A SOB customer does not go to court to argue the merits of the shelter. Other taxpayers lost that argument already (Klamath Strategic Investment Fund v. United States, 472 F. Supp. 2d 885 (E.D. Tex. 2007)). A SOB customer only goes to court to get out of penalties. He knows the shelter doesn’t work and that he has to pay the tax and interest, eventually. The taxpayers who continue to fight SOB penalties cases generally have the resources to fight for a long time. The IRS offered a settlement to SOB customers a decade ago (Announcement 2004-46, 2004-21 IRB 964). Some customers didn’t take the settlement because they thought it was chintzy and could afford to litigate. AD Investment 2000 was a tax shelter penalties case involving the SOB shelter. The taxpayer asserted a “reasonable belief” affirmative defense to the IRS’s imposition of the substantial understatement penalty (a very large fine equal to 20 percent of the tax deficiency). As a defense against the tax penalty, the taxpayer argued that it had done its homework, had examined the law and the facts, and had concluded that the desired tax treatment was more likely than not to survive in litigation. That is one of the defenses to the penalty; the other is reliance on the advice of a tax professional, which is the more usual route. The taxpayer contended that because it was not explicitly relying on advice of counsel, it had not waived attorney-client privilege for lawyers’ opinions saying that the desired tax treatment was more likely than not to prevail. The taxpayer was a partnership, representing partners participating in a shelter. The individual whose state of mind was being evaluated was the managing partner. The IRS essentially argued that the opinions were necessary to determine whether the managing partner had really undertaken his own evaluation of the facts and law, or was just relying on what he read in the legal opinions. Here the IRS argued that the taxpayer waived any privilege that might exist by raising the issue (implicitly assuming that the lawyers’ opinions were privileged in the first place). Privilege can be waived at the drop of a pin. Privilege is easily waived in tax cases (U.S. v. El Paso Co., 682 F.2d 530 (5th Cir. 1982), cert. denied, 466 U.S. 944 (1984)). The question is whether the taxpayer put the opinion in play. The court held that the taxpayer had impliedly waived privilege when opening the issue of the managing partner’s state of mind. Fairness demanded that the IRS be allowed to see evidence of how the managing partner came by his asserted knowledge of the applicable law and the chances of success in litigation. Here is the sentence that got the libertarians’ undies in a twist: “When a person puts into issue his subjective intent in deciding how to comply with the law, he may forfeit the privilege afforded attorney-client communications. April 21, 2014 1:15 AM ETThe path to the Iron Throne is a treacherous one, but at least on Sunday night TV, the late, unlamented Joffrey Baratheon already has a villainous successor. Mad Men's Lou Avery (Allan Havey) may be taking up space in Don Draper's corner office, but he's come nowhere near filling his shoes. In the Season Seven premiere, "Time Zones," Lou revealed himself to be a smug, complacent hack whose dismissive treatment of Peggy and Dawn, reeked of casual sexism and racism. (Anyone who thought Dawn was happier with her new, more predictable boss must have missed the look in her eyes when she filed into his office with a gaggle of white creatives and he quipped, "Gladys Knight and the Pips.") In the latest episode — "A Day's Work"— we see that Don's old secretary is loyal to her former boss, slipping him intelligence about the goings-on at SC&P and refusing, though not too emphatically, payment for her services. That loyalty comes at a price, although getting moved off Lou's desk isn't much of a sacrifice. When Don's daughter Sally unexpectedly drops by her father's former office, Lou is understandably flustered, and palpably relieved when Sally remembers she also knows Joan; clearly, you can see the new boss is thinking this is a matter best settled among women. But when Dawn comes back, after spending her lunch hour buying perfume for Lou's wife, he unloads his discomfort on her and feels betrayed when her first impulse is to call Don. He calls Joan into his office and orders Joan to get him a new secretary. He doesn't care where Dawn goes, as long as he doesn't have to look at her. There's a lot of personnel shuffling in "A Day's Work": Peggy, in an ironic echo of Lou's high-handedness, tells Joan to move her secretary, Shirley, off her desk, and acts offended when Joan asks for an explanation. Joan herself finally gets moved up to Accounts after Jim Cutler notices she's been doing two jobs. Dawn gets moved to reception and then away, after Bert Cooper tells Joan he's "all for the advancement of colored people" — but not so far that they're the first thing clients see when they get off the elevator. When the song stops for this game of musical chairs, she winds up at Joan's desk, relaxing at last with a hint of a well-earned smile. (To cite the show we see playing on Don's TV, she's That Girl. In between, there's a lot of bustling about with banker boxes, people being moved around like disposable figures on a chessboard. In a delightful break-room exchange that goes at least a little ways toward addressing the complaint that Mad Men has been slow to address race in the era of the Civil Rights movement, Dawn and Shirley play out what's obviously a long-running gag by addressing one another with the other's first name: "Hello, Dawn," says Dawn to Shirley, and vice-versa. In fact, it's worse than Dawn and Shirley's little game lets on: It's not just that the white employees have trouble telling their two black co-workers apart; it's that, as far as at least some of their superiors are concerned, they are interchangeable, just cogs that can be swapped in and out on a whim. Don's career, and his professional bearing, was based on the idea that he was irreplaceable: He believed, and was told often enough, that no one could do what he did. But SC&P is humming along with him, and if there's some creative spark missing, maybe that just makes things run more smoothly. They've certainly got plenty of prima donnas to take his place: On the East Coast, Peggy works herself into lather over a bouquet of roses she takes to be a peace offering, or a romantic overture, from Ted Chaough. She ended "Time Zones" weeping alone in her empty apartment; with Valentine's Day looming, her loneliness has blossomed into manic desperation, leaving her only a few frizzled hair strands away from a Cathy cartoon. (As Time's James Poniewozik, observed, she's never seemed more like Hannah Horvath.) On the West Coast, Pete's hot-to-trot affair with realtor Bonnie Whiteside hasn't cooled his ardor for landing big clients, or his distaste for following directions. In a scene straight out of a Billy Wilder comedy, Pete and Ted tried to navigate the intra-agency politics of a new account via a trans-continental conference call that malfunctioned in just the right way to allow Pete to eavesdrop on the partners as the bemoaned his impertinence. He's as ambitious as ever, but he hasn't grasped that the way the world works is changing, lamenting that the there's nowhere for him to go in a two-room office. Ted, who is clearly beyond caring about such things, blithely offers to swap offices with Pete, and advises: "Just cash the checks, you're going to die one day. Although no one was gruesomely poisoned or ended up purple-faced, "A Day's Work" was laced with allusions to mortality and fate: Bonnie recalling the "act of God" that burned down what would have been a big-ticket commission; Sally sneaking away from boarding school under the pretense of attending a ceremony for a friend's dead mother; Peggy declaring that the roses in her office made it smell like "an Italian funeral." But for a woman like Bonnie, who seems free of the encumbrances of Old World custom, fate is merely the playing field and not the ballgame. "Our fortunes are in other people’s hands," she tells Pete, "and we have to take them." Or, put in the words of the Zombies song that ran into the closing credits, "'This will be our year' took a long time to come. Eight paragraphs into a Mad Men review and we've barely mentioned Don Draper, who, metaphorically speaking, spent most of the episode sleeping in and eating crackers on the couch. As a functionally unemployed character in an hour built around workplace dynamics, he's still out in the cold; Don has lunch with a colleague, but not that kind of a lunch. If last week's episode was about Don acting out his many selves, this one's about who he is when he's offstage, and if he exists at all. It's less a mid-life crisis than a much-delayed adolescence: Last week, the moving-walkway sequence likened him to The Graduate's Benjamin Braddock. This week, he talks to Sally less like a father to his daughter and more as one peer to another. It's as if his infamous Hershey-pitch meltdown not only revealed his childhood but brought him back to it, and he's been working his way forward ever since. Much of what took place in "A Day's Work" was mundane, but like the episode's nondescript title, the apparent mundanity was deceptive. Only as the pieces finally fell into place did we realize how much had shifted. Like Don, sitting in his car with Sally's unprompted "I love you" still washing over him, it may take us a while to sort through it all. Philip Seymour Hoffman, R.I.P. Peggy takes a step back on "Mad Men. The consequences of deceit have always been a hallmark of Mad Men episodes, but “A Day’s Work” decided to carry the water on that theme quite impressively Sunday night. Hanging over the conclusion of season six was the aspect of Sally catching Don sleeping with Sylvia. At the end of season seven, Don showing Sally who he really was and where he came from was essential – the look they shared in that finale said a lot. But some things need to come out verbally and they did in this episode. 'Mad Men' Deconstruction: Ep. 1, 'Time Zones''Mad Men': Joel Murray on Freddy Rumsen's Return and His Unlikely Bond With Don Draper'Girls on Men' Podcast, Season 7 Episode 2: Peggy's Bowtie Sags and Joan Soars In RedThe Don-Sally connection was really the through-line in an episode that highlighted the selfishness of people in power and how truth is transactional. But if we’re to believe that the one woman in his life Don loves and respects the most – Sally – is influential to his decision (in season six) to be a better man, it had to play out further. And it did in “A Day’s Work” when Sally found out that Don doesn’t work at SC&P anymore and Don, in turn, was able to show her that deception comes in many forms (like going to a funeral not because you want to mourn a roommate’s mother but because you want to go to the city and shop). After slyly mocking her father about not feeling well and how he must have so much work to do, Sally responds to Don’s question about what to write on the note to Sally’s school with what amounts almost to a plea: “Just tell the truth. I loved how Sally’s face was outraged at Don for the most part and how, after Don compared her to Betty (yikes!) by saying, “So, you just laid in wait, like your mother,” she was able to bring up the Sylvia incident in a way that highlighted how much it hurt her, not just solely to slice her father up: It was hard to go to Don’s apartment, Sally said, because she could have run into “that woman” in the elevator. “I could stand there wanting to vomit while I smell her hairspray. And let’s not forget that this episode once again let it be known that Sally is more like Don than Betty and prefers him as a parent. When girls at Sally’s school are jealous that her roommate gets to miss class because the roommate will be mourning her mother, Sally says, “I’d stay here until 1975 if I could get Betty in the ground. That, by the way, is a fantastic line. In the early going of season seven, we can at least say that Don is continuing his attempts to be a better man, which were started in the last episodes of season six. I think that Neve Campbell (!) will certainly be back, but right now Don is not distracted by the usual catnip. He is, however, still pretending to be something he’s not – a grand motif of the series, obviously – this time by pretending to be employed. Now he’s actively looking for work, which is interesting, especially since Mad Men creator and writer Matt Weiner is smart enough to know that in the world of ad agencies, the truth behind Don’s departure will certainly get out. If Weiner and his writers are trying to scare us into thinking Don won’t be able to get back into the business (I’m not saying that’s what they’re trying) it’s not working. We know from the Freddie Rumsen pitches that Don is on his game and we know that Lou, over at SC&P, is a selfish jerk who is just mailing it in. Maybe Don never returns to the firm, but Lou has in no way replaced him. I do like how Mad Men is accurately depicting how the day slips away from a person with no reason to be anywhere – whether it’s Don setting his alarm for 7:30 a.m. and then sleeping past noon, or Don watching all kinds of pointless and boring television. His bringing former secretary Dawn into his scam is nice, as is her ability to keep some level of understanding where the line is that shouldn’t be crossed. This episode gave us a glimpse at how two powerful people – Lou and Peggy – abuse their underlings out of selfishness. Dawn tells Shirley not to tell Peggy the truth about the confusion with the roses (from her fiancé, not Ted) and how sometimes it’s better to be discreet. Dawn being discreet leads, ultimately, to a promotion (taking over for Joan, which was another welcome and well-crafted solution to Joan not being taken seriously as either a partner or a contributor). Shirley, for her part, gets dumped for telling Peggy the truth about the roses and ends up working for Lou, which we know will be bad. (And yes, Dawn and Shirley were calling each other by the opposite names to illustrate how the white workers at SC&P can’t tell them apart. That was Weiner’s way of getting at the racism of the times – hitting it harder with Bert Cooper telling Joan that she can’t put Dawn at the front reception desk because people can see her from the elevator – one of the few overt bits of racism from Cooper. The series also keeps toying with sexism, which it handles with a more deft touch than the racism. You’ve got Jim Cutler elevating Joan to the upper floor, which is long overdue. And out in California, real estate agent Bonnie, who is not afraid to stroke Pete’s ego (“You’re such a big deal”), bristles when Pete –shocker – whines about his fate at SC&P and landing the Southern California Chevy dealers. Not only does Bonnie remind Pete that life can be unfair and you have to take what you want, she doesn’t allow him to upset her work life (pulling up her for sale sign in hopes of cutting the day short) in search a quick bit of hotel sex. “I will chew you up and spit you out,” Pete says to her with his best sexy voice. And she replies, coldly: “Put the sign back.” That scene, which completely emasculates Pete, is reminiscent of when Trudy made him take the gun back to the store. Of course, it wouldn’t be a good episode if we got too much empowerment without a little real-life regression. Because that, too, is the untidy nature of people. And so Peggy, this series’ poster girl for female empowerment, has her job vs. boyfriend moment come up yet again and this time she’s all too human. Thinking the flowers are from Ted (and yes, he is in California moping, clearly unhappy about the rash decision he made in regards to Peggy and leaving his wife), she’s at first flattered to get them (even though they’re Shirley’s) and her delight leads Stan to say, “Look at you – every inch a girl.” (A wonderfully timed moment and line. STORY: 'Mad Men' Deconstruction: Ep. Peggy has spent six seasons not being the “typical” girl of the times, but it would be a false representation of someone like her not to indicate how being lonely and desiring to be wanted are important elements in any person. Peggy lashes out at Shirley for telling her the truth: “You have a ring on! We all know you’re engaged. You did not need to embarrass me. But it’s Peggy who needs to grow up. And yet we get the second scene in two episodes where she’s viscerally gutted behind closed doors – her loneliness eating at her, stealing a bit of what her success has given her. There were plenty of other great and/or telling moments in this episode, including another possible Sharon Tate hint if you’re keeping track at home: As Don watches his morning television, there’s a line that comes from it saying, “That’s not the worst thing that can happen to an actor. This episode employed two more songs, both with more clues/hints about meaning (as I said last week, the use of music is often a way for writers to be more literal than they might otherwise want to be with characters). So the first, “Elenore” by the Turtles, plays in the car while Don is hoping to get Sally to say what’s really thinking. The lyrics you’re probably looking for are here: “Elenore can I take the time/To ask you to speak your mind/Tell me that you love me better.” And of course, by the episode’s end, Sally has done just that. The second song, which comes after Sally tells Don she loves him, is “This Will Be Our Year” from The Zombies, complete with the scene framing these lines:“And I won't forget 
the way you held me up when I was down/And I won't forget the way you said,
"Darling I love you"/You gave me faith to go on/Now we're there and we've only just begun/This will be our year/Took a long time to come. If you’re hoping for another Don Draper spiral into the bottle, I wouldn’t bet on it (besides, he’s marking how much he drinks!). Ultimately, what made this episode work was the closure Don and Sally had on his character – how revealing the dark side to her (by accident) last season woke him to be a better person. Took a long time to come, indeed. She wants to know why he’s no longer at SC&P and Don, exhaling, tells the truth (which, as we know, is all she wants from him). “I didn’t behave well. I said the wrong things to the wrong people at the wrong time. Sally asks what he said. Don: “I told the truth about myself. That’s the line we needed, the scene we needed (and it should be noted that the entire diner scene with the two of them was wonderfully observed – especially because a decision was made to slow time down, to let both characters think for a bit before responding; the dead air standing as an exclamation point about not only how hard this was for them but how cathartic as well). This was a moment when, truth being transactional, Don had to be transparent to Sally. I like how Sally reacted after her father tried to explain why, being out of work, he doesn’t just go live with Megan. He says, without conviction, that he needs to fix things here. After a pause, she says, “Why don’t you just tell her that you don’t want to move to California?” It’s in that moment that Sally knows the one thing that she really needs and wants to know – that her father loves her more than anything or anyone else. It’s why she says, to close the episode, the one thing that Don needed to hear from her: “Happy Valentine’s Day, dad. I love you. Just tell the truth, indeed. Email: Tim.Goodman@THR. LaMarcus Aldridge scored 46 points with 18 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 blocks. And Damian Lillard scored 31 with 9 rebounds and 5 assists. Wesley Matthews added 18 points, and Nicolas Batum had 14 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals. The Blazers played hard defense early, and exploited mismatches at the offensive end to take a 7 point lead. As Houston closed the gap, the first members of the Blazer bench entered the game. Houston focused on driving the ball or shooting the three, but struggled when trying to pound the ball inside. Thomas Robinson brought energy, but the out-of-control type, bringing both good and bad. But when Lillard swished a three-pointer, the Blazer lead reached 8. They retained a 7 point lead at the end of the quarter. The second quarter opened with Batum bouncing a ball off his foot, and a Rockets run. A weird offensive rebound led to a dunk and a tie game, and a timeout from Blazers' Head Coach Terry Stotts. It didn't help, as Chandler Parsons sparked a run while the Blazers couldn't get started at the offensive end. They took another timeout, after being outscored 20-6 in the second quarter and suddenly down 7. Eventually, Houston completed a 13-0 run to take an 11 point lead. The starters took care of business, tying the game while the Houston faithful chanted "Refs you suck!" due to the free throw disparity in Portland's favor. A last-second Harden three-pointer gave the Rockets a 1 point lead at halftime. In the third, Portland came out and simply didn't play their best ball. They made poor mistakes, gave up offensive rebounds, the works. They quickly fell behind by 10 and needed a timeout, then promptly missed at one end, and gave Harden an open three at the other. Lillard responded by dribbling the ball off his foot. As Portland continued to miss three's, Houston comfortably kept the lead near double-digits. But as the quarter wound down, Matthews scored 5 points in 10 seconds to cut the lead to 4. But the Blazers forgot how to rebound again, and Houston held a 6 point lead going into the deciding quarter. Unfortunately the Blazers immediately turned the ball over to start the fourth, and gave up a layup at the other end. That was followed up with Lopez missing two free throws, and another Howard layup. Lillard bricked a three, Mo turned it over, and Beverley hit a wide-open three, and the Rockets led by 13. To put it mildly, it was not a good start to the quarter. After Portland missed three's all night, Aldridge nailed one to settle things down. He followed with a jumper to pull within single digits. A Mo three-pointer cut the deficit to 7. Unfortunately he then committed a flagrant foul, helping Houston pull ahead by double digits. The Lillard came up limping after a Howard screen. He stayed in the game after a timeout. From there... things fell apart. The referees struggled to maintain control, missing a likely Howard goaltend, then called multiple fouls on Lopez, including a technical foul due to Howard instigation. The Blazers finally went to hack-a-Dwight. By that point, Portland was still down 11 with 4 minutes left. And Lillard missed a free throw in response. But after two missed free throws from Howard, Lillard was fouled on a three, and nailed it. But missed another free throw. Overall, the fouling was effective, as the Blazers cut the lead to 5 with 3:30 left. And Lillard scored a layup to cut it to three, followed by a Blazer steal, and an Aldridge layup plus the foul! The game was tied. Houston went to Harden, who hit a jumper for the lead at the 2:15 mark. Aldridge missed a free throw, and then turned the ball over, and Harden scored for a 3 point Houston lead with less than a minute left. Aldridge was fouled and hit both to make it a one point game with 40 seconds left. Houston missed, but Howard got the rebound and was fouled. He hit both to give the Rockets a 3 point lead with 32 seconds left. Lillard for three... SWISH, tie game with 29 seconds left! GIF here. At the other end, Harden leaned in and drew a cheap foul for free throws and a 2 point lead with 8 seconds left. With a chance to tie or win, the Blazers went to Matthews, who missed a three, then they missed a tip-in... and Aldridge tipped it in! The game was tied with 3 seconds left. But they left Houston with a chance to win. Harden missed, and we head to overtime. Houston quickly got two consecutive three-point plays in less than a minute of overtime, but Aldridge nailed a three-pointer. and Batum nailed another to tie the game! After a Houston miss, Lillard fed to Matthews to force a foul. The Blazers took a 2 point lead. Houston tied it on a jumper with 2:30 left. Lillard missed a layup, but Lopez dunked a tip-in for the lead. Howard was sort of fouled, and got free throws. The game was tied with a minute left, but a Beverley flop was called as the sixth foul on Aldridge, and Houston had a chance for the lead. With both Lopez and Aldridge gone, the Rockets took the lead on a finger roll with 53 seconds left. Lillard went to the hoop with 45 seconds left, was fouled by Beverley and hit the shot. Beverley fouled out on the play. Lillard hit the free throw for the lead. Francisco Garcia rebounded a Houston miss, and seemed to be tied up, but was given a foul. He missed the second, but Howard pushed through to get the rebound, was fouled, and hit one. Houston had a one point lead with 24 seconds left. Portland got the ball to Lillard, who was fouled on the drive. With 17 seconds left, he hit both for the lead. Harden missed a three, and the refs called an iffy foul on Dwight Howard, fouling him out of the game. Joel Freeland went to the line, and hit one for a 2 point Blazer lead with 10 seconds left. Houston got it to Harden, for a contested jumper... Aldridge set a postseason franchise record with 46 points. Aldridge also joined select company league-wide. 2014 APR 21 -- By a News Reporter-Staff News Editor at Biotech Week -- Physicians have long suspected that chemotherapy can accelerate the aging process in patients treated for cancer. Using a test developed at UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center to determine molecular aging, UNC oncologists have directly measured the impact of anti-cancer chemotherapy drugs on biological aging. Researchers measured the level of p16, a protein that causes cellular aging, in the blood of 33 women over the age of 50 who had undergone chemotherapy for curable breast cancer. Samples were taken for analysis of molecular age from patients before chemotherapy, immediately following chemotherapy and a year after therapy finished. The analysis showed that curative chemotherapy also caused an increase in a patient's molecular age that on average was equivalent to 15 years of normal aging. The same was true in a separate group of 176 breast cancer survivors who had received chemotherapy on average three and a half years prior. The study, headed by Hanna Sanoff, MD, MPH, assistant professor with the UNC School of Medicine and member of UNC Lineberger, is published in this week's Journal of the National Cancer Institute. Dr. Sanoff said that the results indicate that the p16 test holds promise as a means of evaluating how chemotherapy will affect a patient's long-term health and survival and as a predictive biomarker for the long-term toxicity of chemotherapy. "Our theory is that if you have an advanced molecular age to begin with, it will be harder for you to tolerate chemotherapy," said Dr. Sanoff. "We believe a high level of p16 before treatment could mean that a patient will have a harder time making new blood cells after each chemotherapy treatment, and therefore be at greater risk for anemia and infection during chemotherapy. The key role of p16 in human aging has been established over the last decade in the lab of UNC Lineberger Director Dr. Norman Sharpless. Research conducted in Sharpless' lab showed in 2004 that the levels of p16 increase exponentially with aging, and developed the p16 blood test for human use in 2009. The next direction for this research, ongoing under the leadership of Dr. Hyman Muss, director of UNC Lineberger's Geriatric Oncology Program, involves determining if markers of molecular age predict patients' physical function and outcome in a number of clinical settings. "While these findings are highly provocative, we have much more to study and will have to verify in future trials how these changes in molecular aging affect long term survival," said Dr. Muss. "Adjuvant chemotherapy has dramatically improved breast cancer survival and pending further data, the results of our study should not effect adjuvant chemotherapy decisions. The p16 test seems particularly well-suited as an aging marker for this purpose as it plays a causal role in biological aging, is strongly correlated with chronological aging, and increases exponentially in response to pro-aging stimuli. Dr. Sanoff said she believes the test has promise as the basis of a clinical tool allowing physicians to evaluate the degree to which a given treatment accelerates biological and physical aging. But when Lillard swished a three-pointer, the Blazer lead reached 8. They retained a 7 point lead at the end of the quarter. The second quarter opened with Batum bouncing a ball off his foot, and a Rockets run. A weird offensive rebound led to a dunk and a tie game, and a timeout from Blazers' Head Coach Terry Stotts. It didn't help, as Chandler Parsons sparked a run while the Blazers couldn't get started at the offensive end. They took another timeout, after being outscored 20-6 in the second quarter and suddenly down 7. Eventually, Houston completed a 13-0 run to take an 11 point lead. The starters took care of business, tying the game while the Houston faithful chanted "Refs you suck!" due to the free throw disparity in Portland's favor. A last-second Harden three-pointer gave the Rockets a 1 point lead at halftime. In the third, Portland came out and simply didn't play their best ball. They made poor mistakes, gave up offensive rebounds, the works. They quickly fell behind by 10 and needed a timeout, then promptly missed at one end, and gave Harden an open three at the other. Lillard responded by dribbling the ball off his foot. As Portland continued to miss three's, Houston comfortably kept the lead near double-digits. But as the quarter wound down, Matthews scored 5 points in 10 seconds to cut the lead to 4. But the Blazers forgot how to rebound again, and Houston held a 6 point lead going into the deciding quarter. Unfortunately the Blazers immediately turned the ball over to start the fourth, and gave up a layup at the other end. That was followed up with Lopez missing two free throws, and another Howard layup. Lillard bricked a three, Mo turned it over, and Beverley hit a wide-open three, and the Rockets led by 13. To put it mildly, it was not a good start to the quarter. After Portland missed three's all night, Aldridge nailed one to settle things down. He followed with a jumper to pull within single digits. A Mo three-pointer cut the deficit to 7. Unfortunately he then committed a flagrant foul, helping Houston pull ahead by double digits. The Lillard came up limping after a Howard screen. He stayed in the game after a timeout. From there... things fell apart. The referees struggled to maintain control, missing a likely Howard goaltend, then called multiple fouls on Lopez, including a technical foul due to Howard instigation. The Blazers finally went to hack-a-Dwight. By that point, Portland was still down 11 with 4 minutes left. And Lillard missed a free throw in response. But after two missed free throws from Howard, Lillard was fouled on a three, and nailed it. But missed another free throw. Overall, the fouling was effective, as the Blazers cut the lead to 5 with 3:30 left. And Lillard scored a layup to cut it to three, followed by a Blazer steal, and an Aldridge layup plus the foul! The game was tied. Houston went to Harden, who hit a jumper for the lead at the 2:15 mark. Aldridge missed a free throw, and then turned the ball over, and Harden scored for a 3 point Houston lead with less than a minute left. Aldridge was fouled and hit both to make it a one point game with 40 seconds left. Houston missed, but Howard got the rebound and was fouled. He hit both to give the Rockets a 3 point lead with 32 seconds left. Lillard for three... SWISH, tie game with 29 seconds left! GIF here. At the other end, Harden leaned in and drew a cheap foul for free throws and a 2 point lead with 8 seconds left. With a chance to tie or win, the Blazers went to Matthews, who missed a three, then they missed a tip-in... and Aldridge tipped it in! The game was tied with 3 seconds left. But they left Houston with a chance to win. Harden missed, and we head to overtime. Houston quickly got two consecutive three-point plays in less than a minute of overtime, but Aldridge nailed a three-pointer. and Batum nailed another to tie the game! After a Houston miss, Lillard fed to Matthews to force a foul. The Blazers took a 2 point lead. Houston tied it on a jumper with 2:30 left. Lillard missed a layup, but Lopez dunked a tip-in for the lead. Howard was sort of fouled, and got free throws. The game was tied with a minute left, but a Beverley flop was called as the sixth foul on Aldridge, and Houston had a chance for the lead. With both Lopez and Aldridge gone, the Rockets took the lead on a finger roll with 53 seconds left. Lillard went to the hoop with 45 seconds left, was fouled by Beverley and hit the shot. Beverley fouled out on the play. Lillard hit the free throw for the lead. Parsons rebounded a Houston miss, and seemed to be tied up, but was given a foul. He missed the second, but Howard pushed through to get the rebound, was fouled, and hit one. Houston had a one point lead with 24 seconds left. Portland got the ball to Lillard, who was fouled on the drive. With 17 seconds left, he hit both for the lead. Harden missed a three, and the refs called an iffy foul on Dwight Howard, fouling him out of the game. Joel Freeland went to the line, and hit one for a 2 point Blazer lead with 10 seconds left. Houston got it to Harden, for a contested jumper... Aldridge set a postseason franchise record with 46 points. Aldridge also joined select company league-wide. Here's a list of players who have gone 45/15 in a postseason game since 1986. The Blazers and Rockets get two full days off to recover from this game, and pick up Wednesday night in Houston for Game 2. The perks of becoming debt-free can be far-reaching, and lead to greater rewards than you imagined. But the downsides can be an even better motivation to get debt-free. Here are some of the ways debt can hold you back. 1. “Debt is a dream killer,” Kerry Hannon says bluntly in her book, “What’s Next? Finding Your Passion and Your Dream Job in Your Forties, Fifties and Beyond. Hannon, who has interviewed literally hundreds of people who have made career changes, says that money is the biggest stumbling block to making a career change. “If you start a new career you’ll probably start at a lower salary and if you start a new business you may not be able to take a salary,” she told me in a recent interview. In her book she recommends would-be career changers get financially fit by creating a budget, building up emergency savings, getting their credit reports and boosting their credit scores, among other steps. Getting your finances in shape in turn allows you to be more “nimble,” she says. 2. “I think people underestimate how nerve-wracking it is to have debt hanging over your head,” says Beverly Harzog, who detailed how she paid off about $20,000 in debt in her book “Confessions of A Credit Junkie.” “The stress can lead to headaches and all kinds of health issues. Paying it off can make eliminate this common source of stress and make you feel a whole lot better. “After I paid it off, I had more energy than I’d had in years. My mind just felt so free,” she says. You may also feel happier. “Our findings suggest that dealing with credit card debt and loans has the biggest impact on happiness,” writes Grant Donnelly on the blog BeyondthePurchase.org. The post goes on to say: “Has your credit card or student loan debt gone unchecked? Developing a repayment plan might not only improve your financial situation, but might actually make you happier as well. 3. “Being debt-free gives me full freedom when making all my financial decisions,” says Cait Flanders, founder of the blog Blonde on a Budget. Flanders paid off $30,000 in two years. “I don’t owe anyone money, so every paycheque I earn is mine to choose what to do with. There are still expensive months, and money is still always on my mind. But nobody controls my financial situation now – it’s all on me. Freedom will mean different things to different people. It might mean having room in your budget for one parent to stay home full time or work part time while your children are young. It might mean the ability to move somewhere cheaper, downsize or go back to school. Hopefully it also means you can free up money for savings and investments that will, in turn, help you avoid future debt and build wealth. When you are struggling with debt, you may find yourself spending a lot of time checking your balances and trying to figure out how to juggle your finances so that you can pay each bill that comes due. You may have to stop more frequently for gas or groceries since you can’t afford to fill up the tank or the fridge. You may be working an extra job to make ends meet or taking low-paying side gigs to bring in extra cash. It can be exhausting, and paying off debt can give you more time to enjoy life. Plus, you won’t continue to beat yourself up over the choices that led you to this place. (No doubt you’ve done enough of that already). “Our financial position right now is worse than it could have been and it’s solely because of those wasted years. For the rest of our lives, that statement will be true. We will never achieve what we could have achieved because of those years of overspending. 5. If you are carrying high levels of debt on your credit cards in particular, no doubt your credit scores have taken and hit and you may well find yourself in a Catch-22: You want to consolidate your debt to lower your interest rates, but you can’t qualify because of your credit scores. Paying down debt can break that logjam, allow you to lower your rates and in turn help you pay off your balances faster. In this situation, it’s wise to pay as much as you can toward the credit cards that are closest to their limits. Doing so will likely boost your credit scores since about 30% of your credit score (in most scoring models) is based on the debt you carry, and in particular how much of your available credit limits you are using. Reducing this “debt-to-limit” or “utilization” ratio can often quickly boost your credit scores. For some people with very large balances or no means to repay their debts, it may make sense to consult with a credit counseling agency or even talk with a bankruptcy attorney. “I exercised a lot while I was paying off my debt and it helped me cope,” says Harzog. In the meantime, don’t let life pass you by. “My advice is to stop waiting or expecting life is going to be better when your credit card bills are eliminated,” says Steve Rhode, founder of GetOutofDebt.org, “and just start enjoying life today. TV;“Orphan Black”;Tatiana Maslany;Clones;Science Fiction;Jordan Gavaris“Orphan Black,” a sci-fi thriller about clones, set in Toronto, is a good show, but it’s not flawless. After a strong first half to its début season, during which the episodes were universally funny and sharp and suspenseful, the show lost its footing slightly as it approached the finale. Its conspiracy plot felt shaggy; the pace flagged. Season 2, which began Saturday on BBC America, continues along this line: individual scenes are terrific, but a few plotlines strain credulity. If it weren’t for Tatiana Maslany, the show’s star, “Orphan Black” would be just a likable-enough thriller, with Toronto local color—enough to recommend it to a Canadaphilic sci-fi buff like me, but maybe not to you. Maslany explodes that calculation entirely. The actress delivers a performance so magnetic that it transforms the show into something with staying power, a near must-watch. Maslany plays eight clones. Through digital trickery, her characters play scenes with one another—bickering, bonding, and strategizing. On more than one occasion, she plays one clone pretending to be another, exposing her own fakery in precise titrations, so that we sense the pretender’s anxieties and her miscalculations. This could easily come off as a circus trick, a gimmick. And yet it doesn’t: with her observant black eyes, wide smile, and an array of wigs, tics, and accents, Maslany makes herself invisible in a situation that practically demands hammy showmanship. AP FILE PHOTOMANILA, Philippines – The Department of Health on Monday announced that the initial batch of passengers of Etihad Airlines flight EY 0424 tested negative for the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome – Corona Virus (MERS-CoV). “Sa mga lumabas na resulta na nakuha natin, lahat naman ay negatibo pa,” Dr. Lyndon Lee Suy, DOH’s program manager for national disease prevention and control, told Inquirer Radio 990AM. (Of the results that came out, everyone tested negative. Suy said they have already contacted 113 out of 414 passengers of the said flight that arrived in the Philippines last April 15. So far, 14 of them tested negative for the virus. The announcement came days after the agency re-examined a male Filipino nurse who tested positive for the virus in the United Arab Emirates. The nurse, who did not show symptoms of the illness, was already on the said Etihad flight when his test results came out in UAE, where a Filipino paramedic died because of the MERS-CoV. Suy said the nurse underwent the test twice in the Philippines to make sure that he was no longer a carrier of the virus. He said it was possible that the nurse was initially exposed to the virus but recovered on his way home. “Not until na-examine natin lahat ng nakasakay doon sa Etihad EY 424…then we can safely say na as of the moment wala tayong MERS Corona Virus. Kaya pinaiigting natin ang kampanya natin na hanapin po ang iba pang pasahero,” Suy said. (Not until we examined all the passengers of Etihad EY 424 can we safely say that as of the moment the country has no incidence of MERS Corona Virus. That is why we are intensifying our campaign to find the other passengers. Over the weekend, both the DOH and Malacañang sent advisories, urging the passengers to contact authorities (through DOH’s 24-hour hotlines: 711-1001; 711-1002; 0922-884-1564; 0920-949-8419; at 0915-772-5621) and undergo testing. While the DOH is already coordinating with Etihad, some of the numbers in the passengers list were out of service. “To be honest, merong mga pasahero na may resistance. Pinaliwanagan namin na ito ay hindi lang para sa inyo kundi para sa pamilya ninyo,” Suy explained. (To be honest, there are also passengers who are resistant. But we explain that it must be done not just for them but for their families. He said the test is free and the nose and throat swab can be done at a nearby government hospital or DOH personnel can visit the passenger’s residence. The DOH has already published the list of passengers yet to be contacted and tested for MERS-CoV. Although a Filipino paramedic had already died of the virus earlier this month in UAE, the spread of MERS-CoV is not yet considered an epidemic. The MERS-CoV is a deadly virus related to the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). Its symptoms include fever, cough, shortness of breath and diarrhea. According to the World Health Organization, from September 2012 to April 17, 2014, there were 243 confirmed cases of MERS-CoV infection all over the world, 93 of which have resulted in death. Malaysia, on Wednesday, reported the first death attributed to MERS-CoV in Asia. CommentsAlthough many Phoenix Suns fans are sure to be disappointed with the team narrowly missing the playoffs, they should also be extremely proud of the efforts of a team that, before the season, was projected to end up in the lottery. To add to the current upward trend the Suns are on, general manager Ryan McDonough has stockpiled three first-round picks in the upcoming 2014 NBA draft. Phoenix was just one more playmaker away from making the playoffs in the loaded Western Conference this season. With this draft class being regarded as one of the deepest in recent history, it is quite reasonable to think the Suns could land at least one playmaker with the ability to come in right away and make key contributions to their roster. According to draftexpress.com, the Suns currently have the No. 14, No. 17 and No. 27 overall picks. According to SB Nation's, Dave King, McDonough recently said, “I think it’s unlikely that we’ll bring in three rookies to the Suns. Phoenix would ideally love to make a trade for a top-flight player, but it is likely the Suns will bring in at least one player with one of their first-round picks. So with that in mind, let’s take a quick look at the best and most realistic options for the Phoenix Suns in the 2014 NBA draft. Frank Franklin II Doug McDermott will go down as one of the greatest scorers in college basketball history, finishing fifth all time in points scored during his illustrious career at Creighton. This past season he averaged 26.7 points and seven rebounds per game while shooting a blazing 45 percent from downtown. McDermott is not the best athlete and his defensive limitations will be tested in the NBA, but he is bound to have success in the league as a lights-out three-point shooter. Not only does he just shoot it from deep, but he can go around defenders, pull up for mid-range jumpers or even take it into the post and execute a Dirk Nowitizki-like one-legged fadeaway. For the Suns, he would help tremendously with floor spacing and the ability to put the ball in the basket from anywhere on the floor, most importantly from beyond the arc. Jamie Squire/Getty Images James Young had an up-and-down year as a freshman at Kentucky. He started out great, then hit a rough patch in the middle of the season, but then really hit his stride in the NCAA tournament. He can shoot it from deep with a beautiful left-handed stroke, and he really excels in attacking the basket. He is relentless when driving through the lane and is great at finishing at the rim or drawing the foul. For Phoenix, he would be a young, athletic player on the wing who can really score and get out and run in transition. Grant Halverson/Getty Images At 6’8” and 215 pounds, Rodney Hood has great size for an NBA wing. Although he was slightly overshadowed by Jabari Parker at Duke this past season, Hood is certainly no slouch and can really fill it up. He averaged 16.1 points while shooting 42 percent from three-point range this season. Hood is a smooth lefty who can shoot it from deep or go around defenders and attack the rim. He’ll need to improve his defense a bit at the next level, but Hood could really help in Phoenix. He could very well be that additional scorer who puts Phoenix over the top. T.J. Warren: N.C. Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images T.J. Warren is a big, strong and tough small forward with a great feel for the game. At 6’8” and 230 pounds he thrives scoring inside, driving to the whole and floating the ball over defenders. He was a prolific scorer at N.C. State, averaging 24.9 points per game. He is also a good rebounder and defender on the wing, averaging 7.1 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game this season. For the Suns, Warren would provide a physical presence on the wing. He needs to improve his outside shot, but he provides great scoring ability on the inside by driving the ball to the hole. Andy Lyons/Getty Images Nik Stauskas was the Big Ten Conference Player of the Year this past season and may have been the most improved overall player in the country. He averaged 17.9 points, 2.9 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game while shooting 44 percent from downtown this season at Michigan. He is arguably the very best shooter in the draft, with a super quick release and the ability to knock down shots from pretty much anywhere on the floor. He is deceptively athletic and also possesses a very good handle with the ability to run the point when needed. He would thrive in Phoenix, providing a tremendous three-point threat as well as the ability to score off the bounce and find open players when he’s defended. P.J. Sergio Hentschel/Getty Images At 6’5” and 220 pounds, P.J. Hairston is an ultra tough and physical guard who can light it up from deep. He has excellent range on his jumper and is also a very good finisher at the rim. Hairston averaged 21.8 points per game in the D-League, proving himself to be one of the most NBA-ready players in the draft. Although he has had problems in the past with getting kicked out of North Carolina, it is believed he has matured and is ready to become a full-time professional. He would do very good things for Phoenix, a team that needs one more piece to get over the hump. Hairston is experienced and brings an NBA-ready scoring mentality that would be able to shine in Phoenix. Jeff Gross/Getty Images Kyle Anderson is easily the most unique player in this year’s draft class. At 6’9” and 235 pounds, Anderson has the ability to play every position on the floor except for center. His stat line at UCLA this season was ridiculous with averages of 14.6 points, 8.8 rebounds, 6.5 assists and 1.8 steals per game. He has a very nice mid-range game and has greatly improved his three-point shot. He’s not the most athletic player, but Anderson could possibly be great in Phoenix. He would bring in tremendous versatility and playmaking abilities. Phoenix needs at least one more playmaker, and although Anderson is not the typical dynamite athlete you would think of, he could be a very unique asset in Phoenix. Andy Lyons/Getty Images Several of the players on this list are similar in playing styles and abilities, so it really depends on who the team individually falls in love with when it comes down to drafting one of them. Cleanthony Early is another very solid option who could come in and contribute in Phoenix. At 6’8” and 215 pounds, Early has ideal size for an NBA wing. He is a versatile player who can score on the inside as well as beyond the arc. He is very athletic and perhaps the best attribute he brings is his defense. Early is a very tough player with a good motor that allows him to really excel on defense. He could be a steal for Phoenix if it selects him. On Turn on AMC tonight, the episode is called Of Cabbages and Kings. The title is likely taken from the Lewis Carroll poem “The Walrus and the Carpenter.” It’s an apropos title, as Abe Woodhull is a cabbage farmer, and the show depicts Americans revolting against the rule of King George III of England, and the activities of America’s first spy ring, the Culper Ring, in thwarting various plots of the Redcoats. In the last episode of Turn on AMC, Who By Fire, at the end, when General Scott (Michael Gaston) appears, he orders Captain Simcoe (Samuel Roukin) to be released. Scott also orders Major General Ben Tallmudge (Seth Numrich), who is behind the creation of the Culper Ring, to report to Fort Lee where he will face disciplinary charges. In the Turn episode, Of Cabbages and Kings, Ben will be betrayed by his own militia. Also, Abe Woodhull (Jamie Bell) has to venture along with his father, Richard (Kevin R. McNally), to New York City, ostensibly on a business trip, though Abe uses the occasion to gain more intelligence to pass along. Also, Abe’s wife, Mary Meegan Warner), confronts the pub landlady, Anna Strong (Heather Lind), in tonight’s episode. Turn on AMC opened with a scene set in Northern New Jersey. Simcoe is being transported via a wagon and he requests a drink of water. Ben Tallmudge and Caleb Brewster (Daniel Henshall) ride at the front of the group. Coming through the fog, Tallmudge, Caleb, and the others see walking wounded members of the Continental Army staggering along. They report that several more men have been killed or taken prisoner. After a commercial break, Richard discusses their travel plans with his son, Abraham. They’re at Abe’s house, and Mary is holding their son. She tells abe she’s “jealous” that he’ll be going to New York. General Scott is travelling along with Tallmudge, Caleb, etc., and they stop at a farmhouse and request permission to stay there the night. Scott tells Tallmudge that he’ll be facing disciplinary charges, but that they “might be tempered” depending on how Tallmudge behaves the rest of their trip. Tallmudge sends Caleb off to find a boat, and continue the activities of the Culper Ring by finding out information from Abe. Richard and Abe, meanwhile, are on their way to New York. Richard suggests stopping by Abe’s old alma mater, but Abe doesn’t like the idea. Caleb mounts a horse and prepares to leave. Some of the militia question him, and believe that he’s deserting. They get the idea that they might be “on the wrong side of the gallows,” and that maybe they should “do something about that.’ Probably, this means switching allegiances. As Abe and his father, Judge Woodhull, walk down the street, they meet with a Redcoat officer who Judge Woodhull tells “I trust him with all my affairs.” The officer says he wouldn’t trust Abraham with his, and then laughs, as if he’s just joking around. They walk by a Punch and Judy puppet show, then Turn went to another commercial break. Back from break, Caleb pulls his boat onto shore and is helped out by another man, presumably a friend of his, in the fog. Anna Strong notices something she finds strange about her clothesline (maybe a knot on it) and goes to her barn, where Caleb is hiding in the straw. Anna tells him that she can find out information that might be useful from Redcoats who drink at her tavern, and spill secrets. She tells Caleb, who is apparently interested in her, that she would make a great addition to the Culper Ring. He tells her, though, that it’s not the work for ladies. Anna protests, saying that she knows of many women brave enough to be spies. In New York, Richard and Abraham have a business meeting with the Redcoat officer they met in the streets, and they attempt to come to a business deal involving selling hogs to the Redcoats. Abraham interjects, and gets a better deal for his father than Richard would probably have settled on. Simcoe, Tallmudge, Scott, etc. are having dinner at the farmhouse and the militia outside, who are supposed to be loyal, point their guns at Tallmudge, Scott, and Caleb, telling them to go with them and be their prisoners. There was a brief gun battle, where Scott was one of the people who got wounded, along with the farmer. Simcoe told one of the militia that he would take over as their leader, and the man he said it to hit him with his gun, knocking Simcoe to the ground. Back on Turn on AMC, Mary is in her house with a man, their boarder, rubbing his shirt, trying to get a stain off of it. Then, in Anna’s barn, she is continuing her discussion with Caleb. Caleb asks her to go to the wharf and see if there are any unattended boats there. She tells Caleb that Abe said he’s “done with this double life.” Abraham told her something like that, though he’s really far from done with being a spy. Back at the farmhouse, Ben Tallmudge is trying to convince the militia members who have turned against him to remember their oaths, and stand against the British and King. They, though, give the people inside an ultimatum to give themselves up to them. Richard and Abe talk in their room in New York and Richard says that he had thought his son was turning into a worthy man, who could take care of his own family. They have a blow-up, and Abe storms out of the house. At King’s College, where Abe has wandered off to, a Redcoat confronts him and tells him to get to his home. Abe then walks up to a campfire where a couple of other Redcoats are, and tells them he’s a “cabbage farmer.” They give him some food to eat, and they discuss buying cabbage from him. Through talking with them, and asking them where they would like him to deliver a boatload of cabbage, Abe finds out their military positions that he will later report on. Mary says that she knows Abraham is a “passionate man.” She agrees to let Anna and Abe keep seeing each other, thinking that they are having an affair; but, Anna tells Mary that is not the case, at all. She says that they had been “secretly engaged” but that Abe’s father objected to the potential marriage. The militia outside the farmhouse say that they will come into the farmhouse soon, unless the people inside give up and come out. Ben, and the wounded Scott, exit the farmhouse, with Ben saying “Don’t shoot!” He then pulls out his pistol, and shoots one of the militia in the head. Simcoe, jerk that he is, claps his hands together and says “Well done, Captain! Well done!” Tallmudge must be a Captain, though he later becomes a Major General. Abraham then arrives at Anna’s house, “with gifts from New York.” He then tells Caleb and Anna the information on the enemy positions. Anna tells Abraham that Captain Simcoe is dead. Caleb was about to tell Abe the truth, that he wasn’t dead at all; but, Anna said “Let it come from me.” Possibly, she doesn’t want Abe to be disappointed that Simcoe is still very much alive. Close to the end of Turn on AMC, Caleb’s head pops up from out of the water. He sneaks aboard a rowboat along the shoreline, hiding underneath a blanket, with the watchful eyes of Redcoats all around. Back at the farmhouse, General Scott orders Tallmudge to shoot one of the militiamen, who Tallmudge has promised after talking to him, would be safe. Scott tells Ben that he will face a court martial for disobeying him. “I’ll take the court martial.” Ben tells him. Scott then points his own pistol at the man, and kills him. Caleb comes out from hiding, pointing two pistols at the two oarsmen who are now in the boat. He orders them to row, while Redcoats shoot at them — but, they are already too far out of the range of the Redcoats for their bullets to reach him. In the last episode of Turn on AMC, the Scotsman Loyalist Richard Rogers had asked Abe to keep tabs of John Robeson, the man who had murdered Captain Joyce. However, Abe couldn’t do this, at least not this episode, as he was on a business trip with his father. Rogers will likely have to overlook Abe’s not keeping tabs on Robeson, as going to New York was something he couldn’t help but do. The next episode of Turn on AMC is called “Eternity How Long.” It seems like if Captain Scott doesn’t meet with an untimely death, when they arrive in New York with Simcoe he will insist that Ben Tallmudge is court martialed. Perhaps something will happen while they are still on their way there that will change his mind, or perhaps, he will get killed before they arrive. It is not that Big Brother is watching us. It is that we are constantly telling Big Brother things about ourselves, and BB has a big memory. I went into a favourite bookshop in Kilkenny recently to collect a book I had ordered. The proprietor loves books, loves her shop, and knows her customers. We fell into conversation and I asked, as I usually do, was there anything I should be reading. Sure enough, she had a book that she thought I would like. I felt like a person, an individual with my own interests and tastes, a customer that she had taken an interest in, and it turned out that she was right. The book was called Unravelling Oliver by a first-time author, Liz Nugent, and I devoured it in one late-night sitting. Bed was out of the question until I got to the end. The same week, I was in a restaurant with an old friend. He was looking at the wine list and two wines took his fancy. He asked the waiter for an opinion and the man was immediately able to tell him what wine he drank the last time he was in, that he had liked it and, on that basis, made his recommendation. I sat there, awestruck, and knew that restaurant would be keeping that particular customer for all time. The bookseller and the waiter are good at what they do. And I liked it. Why, then, did I go ballistic when an online bookstore told me that people who bought a CD I was thinking about also liked X, Y and Z? They also were right. They may as well have looked into my brain, vinyl collection, ipod and computer. They probably knew where I went on holidays, who was in my phone book and how many hours sleep I needed. I had given them all this information over the years, and they forget nothing. I most certainly did not feel like an individual. I just felt like a consumer. The only relationship available was one where I put in my credit card numbers, they sent me the product, and made yet more notes about me. We all have a sense of self, a sense of what type of person we are, of our values, interests, abilities and weaknesses. It may be well- founded. Or it may be wildly inaccurate. I may see myself as generous, while others might see me as a skinflint. I may think I am fairly smart while the general consensus may be that I am thick as two short planks. Usually, part of our self-concept is a feeling of uniqueness. We pride ourselves on being that bit different from everybody else. Shopping online involves giving away information about our behaviour. Properly collated, this information can be used to predict our likes, dislikes and probable behaviour. When I read about what I would like on an anonymous website, I feel less like a person and more like a cypher. Or when they wear puck-shaped head gear with “Go Habs Go!” on them, or show up with their shiny aluminum foil Stanley Cup replicas. Long before the puck dropped last night for Game 3 of the Canadiens-Tampa Bay Lightning playoff series, fans were getting into the playoff spirit outside the Bell Centre. People crammed onto Avenue des Canadiens de Montréal for the Fan Jam that started at 4 p.m. — an event that will be repeated three hours before every Canadiens home game during the playoffs. “The atmosphere is incredible,” said Benjamin Parizeau, 24, of Montreal who was wearing his newly purchased Canadiens T-shirt. Parizeau expressed some concern that the Canadiens, who went into the game with a 2-0 lead in their best-of-seven series with Tampa, might let up a bit and lose the game. “That’s the danger, but I don’t think it will happen,” Parizeau added. “I think the guys know what they have to do. I think we’ll win big tonight. It will be 3-0 in the series,” he predicted. François Dumontier from Charlemagne wore a red spiky Mohawk-style wig. His two buddies sported blue and white versions that they picked up at a costume shop. “Everyone wants pictures with us,” Dumontier said. “It will be Canadiens in four and after that everything is possible,” he said. “You never know. The Canadiens got bounced from the playoffs after only five games last year in their first-round series against the Ottawa Senators. Dumontier said he’s more optimistic this year about the Habs. The Canadiens have a lot of depth and goaltender Carey Price has shown he’s able to play under pressure, he said. “We could surprise. Former Canadiens Yvan Cournoyer and Mathieu Darche signed autographs. In a nearby booth, some people got free Canadiens-themed tattoos. The interest in the tattoos “was more than we can handle,” said Chris Saliba, the owner of Adrenaline. They had done about 20, Saliba said, by about 5:30 p.m. Delia Xenophontos got booed good-naturedly as she walked through the crowd wearing a blue Lightning jersey. The reception she got wasn’t all good-natured, said the 19-year-old from Toronto who was there with her parents. “I’ve just always loved the Lightning,” she said. She said she wasn’t worried about the Bolts’ chances. “I have faith in them. Everything seemed noisier in the Bell Centre as you would expect during the playoffs. Fans waved the white towels they were given and chanted “Go Habs Go” during the pregame presentation, which included archival video images of the Canadiens projected onto the ice. There was a loud “Ca-rey! Ca-rey!” chant for Price before the national anthems, then a loud ovation for legendary Quebec singer Ginette Reno, who sang O Canada. Many in the crowd sang along with her. There was more for the crowd to cheer about when Rene Bourque scored 11 seconds into the game, beating Lightning goaltender Anders Lindback on a breakaway. The crowd took up the opposing goalie taunt in the first period, dragging out the pronunciation of Lindback’s last name. Andy Slipp, from Fredericton, N.B., was one of several Canadiens fans from out of town at the game. “My daughter and my wife hadn’t been to a playoff game … The atmosphere is incredible. So we had to get them up to a game,” Slipp said outside before the game as people sang the Olé song nearby. He and his son also plan to stay for Tuesday’s game.
